EIGHTY8 is an experimental project leveraging recent improvements in AI and low-cost edge computing.
Inspired by a futuristic cyberpunk aesthetic, EIGHTY8 conveys utilitarian intent. Subtle details, such as bevelled edges and wheel covers, suggest a “softness” for human interaction.
Designed for novel interaction, entertainment, and companionship. The robot autonomously detects and tracks human faces and bodies, physically moving to maintain “attention” on people in its environment.
Functional development and test is ongoing. EIGHTY8 has since had multiple reconfigurations.
Beneath the protective cover plates lies a functional chassis.
Ongoing Development
The carrier tray was modified to make it even more accessible and easier to use. An 18650 battery holder facilitates easy battery changes for long development sessions.
As a development platform, Eighty8 continues to evolve.
The original chassis lacked sufficient space for all the sub processers. The chassis was opened up to facilitate easy access. Battery carriers were added underneath the tray.
